Hair Extension Grades Explained: 10A, 12A, 13A and 14A
Grade letters are used loosely across the industry. Here is what each band genuinely changes in the hair you receive, and how to choose the right grade for your buyers.
What Hair Grades Actually Measure
There is no global regulator for hair grades, which is why grading only means something when the manufacturer publishes a written spec behind each letter. In practice, four physical properties move the grade: cuticle alignment, drawn ratio (how many strands run full length), thickness at the tip and processing load.

The visible difference is at the ends. Single-drawn hair is naturally beautiful but thins towards the tip because the ponytail contains mixed lengths. Double-drawn hair has short strands removed by hand, so a 22" bundle looks 22" from top to bottom — heavier, denser and more expensive to produce.
Which Grade Should You Stock?
Most successful resellers carry two grades, not one:
- A volume grade (10A or 12A) to win first-time customers on price.
- A hero grade (13A or 14A) to upsell repeat customers and protect margin.
Salons usually settle on 12A for installs and 13A for clients who colour. Distributors serving mixed markets typically split inventory roughly 60/40 between volume and hero grades.
How to Test the Grade You Received
- Tip test: hold the bundle upside down. Double-drawn hair keeps its width to the last inch.
- Weight test: weigh after unpacking; a true 100g bundle should not drop below 95g.
- Comb test: higher grades shed fewer strands on a full wet comb-through.
- Heat test: flat-iron a small section at 180°C — top grades bounce back to texture after washing.
- Colour lift test: 13A–14A lift to #613 without straw texture; lower grades often will not.
