Why Samples Can Lie

Low-grade hair is often finished with a heavy silicone coat. Straight out of the pack it feels glassy and slips through your fingers. After two or three washes the coating strips, the true cuticle damage appears, and the hair mats at the nape. Testing has to simulate that future state, not the unboxing.

The 9 Field Tests

1. Burn test. Human hair burns to grey ash and smells of burnt keratin. Synthetic melts into a hard bead with a plastic smell.
2. Wet comb test. Soak, apply no conditioner, comb from mid-length. Excess shedding means weak wefting or damaged cuticle.
3. Strip-wash test. Wash three times with a clarifying shampoo. If texture changes dramatically, it was coated.
4. Weight test. Weigh on a calibrated scale; a 100g bundle should hold ≥95g.
5. Tip density test. Look at the last inch — double-drawn hair stays full.
6. Cuticle direction test. Slide fingers tip-to-root; genuine Remy resists slightly one way.
7. Heat test. Iron a section at 180°C; quality hair recovers its pattern after washing.
8. Colour lift test. Lift a strand two levels; healthy hair lifts evenly without straw texture.
9. Odour test. Persistent chemical smell indicates aggressive acid processing.

Red Flags in Supplier Behaviour

• Refuses a video of your actual bundle.
• Prices identical across all lengths (real cost rises steeply above 24").
• Cannot explain their grades in physical terms.
• Bank account name differs from invoice company name.
• Stock photos reused across dozens of other websites.
